Ruling NDPP makes a resounding victory in Nagaland’s Urban Local Bodies Elections

The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, NDPP, has made a resounding victory in Nagaland’s Urban Local Bodies Elections, capturing all three municipal councils of Kohima, Mokokchung, and Dimapur and securing a majority in most of the town Councils. NDPP bagged the majority winning 153 seats, followed by 56 Independents. BJP secured 25 seats, NPF 13, NCP-12, INC-7, JDU and NPP 5 each and LJP two seats.

 

The results for the Municipal and Town Council Elections were declared yesterday. The State Election Commission, SEC, said, a total of 1 Lakh 84 Thousand 126 electors cast their votes for electing candidates in 214 Wards across three Municipal Councils and 21 Town Councils that went to the Poll on June 26.

 

Out of 278 seats contested, 176 were male candidates and 102 were female candidates. Earlier, 64 candidates got elected unopposed. This election was historic for the state of Nagaland, as ULB polls were held after two decades with 33 percent women reservation for the first time. The last ULB election was held in 2004.

 

The SEC said that with the election being held successfully with one-third women reservation, this election saw a substantial number of women entering the fray. Out of a total of 198 women candidates that participated in the election, a record number of 102 women candidates emerged victorious. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has congratulated the winning candidates in the ULB elections.
