In West Bengal, no major incident was reported during the re-polling for panchayat elections at 696 booths in 19 districts.
The re-polling was ordered by the State Election Commission yesterday amid allegations of tampering with ballot boxes and the violence that left 15 people dead. The counting of votes for the tenth panchayat election in the state will take place tomorrow. Counting of three-tier panchayat polls in 20 districts and two-tier panchayat polls in two hill districts will begin at eight in the morning.
A total of 339 counting centres have been opened in the state for counting. Murshidabad has the highest number of 26 counting centres. Elaborate security arrangements have been made to keep the counting process smooth and peaceful.
The state witnessed massive political violence and unrest over the panchayat polls in the state last Saturday. The State Election Commission has taken elaborate precautionary measures to prevent its recurrence during the counting phase. At each counting center Central forces are being deployed. The state armed police and the police of other states will also maintain peace and order in the counting centre as well as in the surrounding areas.
Each counting centre has CCTV surveillance. Section 144 will remain in force outside the counting center. The votes will be counted in the Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti, and finally the Zilla Parishad seats. State Election Commissioner Rajeev Sinha said that it may take July 12 to complete the counting phase.
