Rajya Sabha witnesses repeated adjournments over Manipur violence and other issues

The Rajya Sabha today witnessed three adjournments over Manipur violence and other issues. The Lok Sabha also witnessed one adjournment. In the Rajya Sabha, when the House met for the day, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar disallowed the adjournment notices moved by the opposition members over the Manipur violence and other issues. Opposition members started sloganeering demanding discussion on the Manipur issue. Leader of the House Piyush Goyal reiterated that the government is ready for discussion.

TMC MP Derek O'Brien raised a point of order on rule 267. The Chairman objected to the conduct of Mr. O'Brien. Following this, Leader of the House Piyush Goyal moved a motion to suspend the TMC MP for the remaining part of the session for continuously disrupting the proceedings of the House and disobeying the Chair. Members from Congress, TMC, DMK, Left, and others trooped into the well which forced the adjournment of the House till 12 Noon. When the House reassembled at 12 Noon, the Chairman said, he had consciously decided not to take the sense of House on the motion to suspend Mr O'Brien. He said, if he had completed the suspension procedure, the TMC MP would not have managed to return to the House the same day. Leader of the House Piyush Goyal said that Mr. O'Brien is a senior leader and he should show respect to the Chair and regret his conduct. Mr. Goyal lauded the Chairman for showing magnanimity for not taking extreme steps despite moving a motion to suspend the TMC MP.
 
Meanwhile, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi raised the issue of foreign funding to a media portal. Leader of the House Piyush Goel alleged that opposition is hand in gloves with the foreign forces to which Congress members objected. Opposition members including Congress, DMK, TMC, Left, and others trooped into the well. Treasury bench members also started sloganeering. Later, the House was adjourned till 12.45 PM. When the House reassembled after second adjournment at 12.45 PM, Congress members protested over the remarks of Mr. Goyal. Responding to it, Mr. Goyal said that if anything is objectionable in his comments then it should be expunged. Dissatisfied opposition members continued with their protest. The Chairman tried to run Question Hour but in vain. Later, the House was adjourned till 2 PM.
 
In the Lok Sabha, when the House met for the day, Congress protested over BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s comments on the party and its leaders over alleged foreign funding. Party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury raised the issue of expunction and later restoration of Mr. Dubey's comments on Congress made yesterday. Responding to it, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal termed Mr. Chowdhury's comments as misleading. Speaker Om Birla said, the Presiding Officer enjoys the power of Speaker and he is free to take decisions. Congress MPs trooped into the well protesting over the issue. Later, the Speaker adjourned the House till 12 noon.
