The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned till 2 p.m., and the Lok Sabha till 12 noon. When the Upper House met this morning, Opposition members from Congress, TMC, DMK, RJD and others raised the issue of alleged detention of the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi. Treasury bench members also raised slogans against nepotism, corruption and appeasement. The BJP has launched a campaign against these issues to mark the anniversary of Quit India Movement. Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said, the government is celebrating the anniversary of Quit India Movement, however, Tushar Gandhi has been detained. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar asked the protesting members to go back to their seats and allow the House to function. He expressed displeasure over the wearing of garland of tomatoes by Aam Aadmi Party member Sushil Gupta to protest against the rising prices of tomatoes. Later, the Chairman adjourned the House till 2 p.m.
The Lok Sabha also witnessed protests by members of Opposition parties, including Congress, DMK, TMC and others. When the House met this morning, the Opposition members trooped into the Well, raising slogans against the government. They were demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence in the House. Amid ruckus, Speaker Om Birla tried to run the Question Hour. He repeatedly asked the protesting members to go back to their seats highlighting that the Question Hour is important and MPs can seek answers from the government on significant issues. He said, such conduct of members is not appropriate.
However, agitating members continued with their protest, leading to adjournment of the house till 12 noon.
Earlier, both the Houses paid homage to great heroes and martyrs of the freedom struggle, and observed silence as a mark of respect to freedom fighters. The Lok Sabha also paid tribute to victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.
