In Badminton, Indias PV Sindhu and Malvika Bansod have stormed in to the Women’s Singles pre-quarterfinals at the China Masters 2024 Tournament in Shenzhen, China today. Sindhu defeated Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Malaysia, 21-17, 21-19, in the first round. Sindhu registered her 20th win against the Malaysian opponent in 21 head-to-head matches.
On the other hand Malvika beat Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt of Denmark, 20-22, 23-21, 21-16, despite losing the first game.
Another Indian shuttler, Lakshya Sen will face the seventh seeded, Lee Jii Zia of Malaysia in the Men’s singles first round later today. India’s premier men’s doubles pair, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, will also be in action at the China Masters today. They will take on the pair of Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan of Taiwan. In the women’s Doubles, India’s Treesa Jolly and her partner Gayatri Gopichand will lock horns with another Taiwanese duo, Hu Ling Fang and Jheng Yu Chieh today.
Earlier, India’s Anupama Upadhyaya, the World Number 50, pulled off the biggest win of her career by ousting World Number 15 Beiwen Zhang, 21-17, 8-21, 22-20 in the first round yesterday. In the Mixed Doubles event, India’s B Sumeeth Reddy and N Sikki Reddy also won their opening round match. The world No.32 mixed doubles team beat the American duo of Presley Smith and Jennie Gai, 23-21, 17-21, 21-17.
While in women’s singles, Aakarshi Kashyap, was outplayed by Japan’s world No. 14 Tomoka Miyazaki, who won the contest 21-10, 21-18.
