Punjab is producing over 1.81 lakh tons of fish annually from natural waters, private and panchayati ponds. At present, more than 43,900 acres are dedicated to fish farming in the state.
The
State Fisheries Department has disbursed more than 30 crore rupees subsidy to 618 families in 4 years under the centrally sponsored Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana to promote the Blue Revolution in the state.
During a seminar organized by the department, yesterday, to educate fish farmers about new technologies, best practices and innovative methods of fish farming, State Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries, Gurmeet Singh Khudian said that approximately 14 crore quality fish seed is produced at 16 government fish seed farms annually and distributed to farmers at subsidised rates.
Punjab is also making progress in shrimp farming by using thousands of acres of land which was otherwise unsuitable for agriculture due to water-logging and salinity.
