In Punjab, seven associates of the radical preacher and Lok Sabha MP Amritpal Singh were produced before a court in Amritsar’s Ajnala, today, under heavy police deployment. The court remanded them to police custody until March 25th.
They were under detention in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail under National Security Act (NSA). After their release, yesterday, they were re-arrested by the state police in a case of an attack on a police station in Ajnala in 2023, and flown back to Punjab last evening. The Punjab government has decided not to extend their detention under the stringent National Security Act.
However, Amritpal Singh, the leader of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ group and his two other associates will continue to be held under NSA in Dibrugarh, with their detention scheduled to expire in June.
