The temperature in Puducherry has crossed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Health Department has requested the people to remain indoors between 12 noon and 3 pm. But the number of riders has not decreased in this period. The riders especially two-wheeler riders experience heat and sweating during halts in the main signal points. They have to wait 3 to 4 minutes to get a green signal to move further. Tolerating these 3 minutes is really distressing.
Considering this situation, the Public Works Department has erected a green awning (canopy) at the main signal points. Anna Statue Square, Indra Gandhi Square, Rajiv Gandhi Square, Ajanta Signal and Kamarajar Square signal points now have awnings on both sides. The riders who are waiting in the signals now pass the minutes under shades.
They are relieved from the direct sun rays and have some time to refresh.
In the past years, individuals and associations have erected such Canopies in one or two signal points. To avoid conspiracy PWD refused permission to private parties to erect such Canopies and itself erected Canopies in five major Signal points. This gesture was appreciated by all.
