President Droupadi Murmu has called for speedy justice so that innocent people do not suffer in jails for long period. She said the judiciary should continue regular hearing of cases and give quick justice to the people.
Addressing a function organized to mark the 75 years of the establishment of the Orissa High Court at Cuttack in Odisha, the President said there has been instances where many accused spend more time in jails than the punishment given by the judiciary and this needs to be looked into seriously. She hoped the technological advancement incorporated by the Orissa High Court will bring speedy delivery of justice and set an example in the country.
The President also paid rich tributes to the soldiers who made supreme sacrifice on this day in 1999 Kargil War during her speech. Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal, Chief Justice of Odisha High Court Justice Dr S Muralidhar, and many other judges of the Orissa High Court were present on the occasion.
In the second day of her three-day visit to Odisha, President Murmu went to the Chandi temple at Cuttack and offered prayers to the Goddess. People gathered in large numbers in and around the temple to greet the President. She waved back at the gathering and distributed chocolates to the children. The President also went to the residence of Utkal Gourab Madhusudan Das and paid floral tribute on his statue.
She visited the birthplace of eminent freedom fighter Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and the Netaji Museum at Cuttack. Braving the rain, people queued up on both sides of the road to have a glimpse of the President who hails from the state.
