In Hyderabad, polling has begun for the Member of Legislative Council (MLC) from the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The Biennial Election is being held as the sitting member is completing the term. BJP candidate Dr N Goutham Rao and All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) candidate Mirza Riyaz Ul Hassan Effendi are in the fray. The ruling Congress did not field a candidate while the opposition BRS has asked its corporators to abstain from voting.
The polling will continue till 4 PM at two designated centres set up inside the GHMC head office. Returning Officer Anurag Jayanti informed that there are 112 voters, and each polling station will be staffed by four officials. A reserve team is also in place to tackle contingencies. Section 144 will be in force around the polling centres, and approximately 200 to 250 police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order. Nearly 500 officers and staff have been assigned for election duty.
The counting of votes will be taken up on Friday.
