Over 13 thousand athletes, coaches, and support staff related to various games in the country are insured under specialised medical insurance schemes by the Sports Authority of India to cover sports injuries and other health-related issues.
In a written reply in Rajya Sabha, Minister of Sports Dr Manksukh Mandaviya said that this coverage includes health insurance of up to rupees five lakh per individual and an additional rupees twenty-five lakh for accidental death or severe injuries. Further, under the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Programme for Sports Persons Scheme, assistance of up to Rs ten lakhs is extended to ex-sportspersons and their family members for medical treatment.
Moreover, assistance up to Rs ten lakh is provided to sportspersons who have sustained injuries during training for and participation in sports competitions on a case-to-case basis.
