Odisha: Flash Floods Hit Malkangiri & Koraput Districts

In Odisha, incessant rain triggered by low pressure in the Bay of Bengal has resulted in flash floods in the southern districts of Malkangiri and Koraput. The situation is alarming in Malkangiri, where many parts remain cut off from the mainland as floodwaters overflow all bridges from Pangam to Motu Road in the district. Thousands of people have been evacuated and sheltered in nearby relief camps. The Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) has been deployed in various parts of Malkangiri district for rescue operations. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying essential commodities, are stranded across the district due to the floods. Transportation between Malkangiri and Koraput districts has also been completely severed, with the national highway submerged under floodwater. The state government held a high-level meeting today to review preparedness for dealing with the flood situation in Malkangiri and Koraput, following incessant rains across the state over the past three days. Meanwhile, NDRAF and ODRAF have been kept in readiness for five coastal and adjoining districts, including Ganjam, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, and Boudh, as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours due to the low pressure which has just crossed the coastal town of Puri.
