Niger : Nationwide curfew declared & all institutions of republic are suspended

In Niger, a nationwide curfew has been declared and all institutions of the republic are suspended. The soldiers warned against any foreign intervention. They said they will respect President Mohamed Bazoum's well-being.

Meanwhile, the United States urged Bazoum's release, while the European Union and United Nations, and others have condemned the uprising and said they were following the events with concern. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said their economic and security partnership with Niger depended on the continuation of democratic governance.

On Wednesday, President Mohamed Bazoum was removed from power after soldiers announced that they have carried out a coup d'etat on national TV.

Niger has a long history of military coups since its independence from France in 1960 however in recent years it had been less politically unstable. When Bazoum came to office in 2021, it was the country’s first democratic transfer of power.
