Nepal’s PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ loses vote of confidence in Parliament

Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, ‘Prachanda’ on Friday (12th July 2024) lost top executive post after failing to secure a vote of confidence in the parliament. Prachanda lost trust vote as the largest party in his government, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) withdrew support. In the lower house of the Nepal’s Parliament, the House of Representatives, 194 members voted against his vote of confidence proposal whereas 63 members voted in favour while a member stood neutral. He had to get the support of 138 lawmakers to prove his majority.

 

Following the voting on the confidence motion, Speaker Devraj Ghimire announced that Prime Minister Prachanda’s vote of confidence proposal was denied by a majority of members. A total of 258 members were presented in the house on Friday (12th July 2024). 

 

Akashvani correspondent reports that, in the floor test, motion issued by PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, discussions in Nepal’s House of Representative went for more than six hours.  Following the voting on the confidence motion, Speaker Devraj Ghimire announced that PM Prachanda’s vote of confidence proposal was denied by a majority of HoR members. He had to get the support of 138 lawmakers to prove his majority where only 63 members stood for him.

 

As per Article 100 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, PM Prachanda tabled a motion in the HoR on Friday. This was the fifth time when PM Dahal faced floor test. CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal became Prime Minister for the third time on December 25, 2022. Now, the two largest parties Nepali Congress and CPN-UML will collaborate to form a new government in Nepal.
