In Nepal, several programs were organised nationwide, offering tributes to those who laid down their lives on Martyrs Day . On the occasion, President Ramchandra Paudel said that moving ahead towards fulfilling the aspiration for development and prosperity alone would be a true tribute to the martyrs. Tribute to all the known and unknown martyrs, including the great martyrs Shukraraj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dashrath Chand, and Gangalal Shrestha, who gave their valuable lives for establishing civic freedom and democracy, and for the protection of nationality, would be by fulfilling aspirations of the federal democratic republican governance system. On the occasion, Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav said that the Martyrs Day is a special remembrance of the great martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli visited the Martyrs Memorial at Lainchaur and Martyr’s Gate near Sundhara and paid his homage to the martyrs. Present at the wreath-laying ceremony were the Deputy Prime Ministers, ministers, parliamentarians from various political parties, the Chief Secretary of the government of Nepal, chiefs of security agencies and the Deputy Mayor of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, among others.
In his address to the main celebration of the National Martyrs’ Day, 2025 organised by the government on the Singha Durbar premises today, the Prime Minister said contributions of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the abolition of Rana rule and establishment of democracy at different times are of a significant value.
Martyrs’ Day is observed every year on Magh 16 of Nepali month in memory of brave heroes who gave up on their lives for democratic revolution and democratic people’s movement against the Rana oligarchy. The Day has been celebrated since 2007 BS with various programmes honouring the enduring contributions of the martyrs.
