In Mozambique, around 17 million registered voters voted for a new president, parliament, and provincial governors today. Local media reported that results are expected in about two weeks. The election was held as the outgoing President Filipe Nyusi steps down after a two-term limit. According to media reports, it is expected to extend the ruling party’s 49 years in power. Meanwhile, the opposition is alleging manipulation of the process. If the ruling party wins the vote, 47-year-old Daniel Chapo will be the new president. The ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique, or Frelimo, has routinely denied allegations that it rigs elections. The leftist former liberation movement has been in power in the southern African country since independence from Portugal in 1975.
