In Mizoram, the main function of the 77th Independence Day was celebrated at Assam Rifles Ground in Aizawl on 15th August 2023. In his address, Chief Minister Zoramthanga urged the public to take a solemn pledge to re-dedicate themselves to work towards peace, unity, and harmony for the nation. He said the entire country has been deeply pained by the violent ethnic conflict which erupted in the state of Manipur on 4th May. The series of unfortunate and deplorable incidents which have unfolded since then have deeply aggrieved the entire Mizo society.
He said, the State Government has allocated Rs. 5 crores for relief and rehabilitation and has requested the Central Government to sanction at least Rs. 10 crores for providing bare necessities to these displaced people from Manipur who are seeking refuge in Mizoram.
According to official records, about 12,509 internally displaced persons since then have sought shelter in Mizoram.
In this year’s Independence Day, 4 Mizoram Police personnel were awarded national medals for their exemplary service.
