The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment today organised a grand finale event, Samagam, to mark the culmination of their month-long activities organised for senior citizens in New Delhi. The activities began on the 1st of October, in conjunction with the International Day for Older Persons. The drive aimed to promote the dignity, respect, and security of senior citizens across the country. Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Banwari Lal Verma highlighted the initiative taken to provide health coverage of five lakh crore rupees for all senior citizens aged 70 and above under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
The Minister also underscored various initiatives of the government, such as health camps, pension schemes, skill development programs for elderly workers, and awareness campaigns aimed at fostering intergenerational solidarity. During the event, a short movie was also played, encompassing all the month-long activities undertaken during the celebration of the International Day of Older Persons 2024.
