Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology launches Indian Web Browser Development Challenge in New Delhi

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology today launched an Indian Web Browser Development Challenge in New Delhi. The purpose of the challenge is to develop an indigenous Web Browser for the World, with a built in Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA)  India root certificate. Launching the competition in New Delhi, Arvind Kumar, Controller of Certifying Authorities, said it is a great moment for India as the country has embarked on a new journey to develop its own browser. He said as India is the world's fastest-growing economy the time has come to quit the international browser and reduce the dependency on the foreign technologies. He said the browser will meet all the International compliances and help in protecting personal data.

In his initial remarks, Executive Director of C-DAC, S D Sudarshan said it is a positive move to bring confidence in the common people. He added that it is a new way to encourage the entrepreneurs what they can contribute to the development of the nation. He said that it is an open challenge because the best will come out of this competition. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), is sponsoring the open Challenge Competition in order to encourage the design, and development of an Indian Web Browser. The browser will be built for the major devices and platforms with required security features, plugin interfaces, and supporting latest technologies based on industry standards.  

The government has announced a cash prize of 3.4 crores rupees for developers who will create an indigenous browser. The Ministry said the browser will have to trust the India's controller of Certifying Authorities, which is the India's highest authority for digital signatures.  As per the Ministry, the Indian Tech Start-ups, MSMEs, Companies, and LLPs registered in India under the Companies Act 2013 can apply for the competition. The entity must have at least 51 percent shareholding with Indian citizens or persons of Indian origin and the applicant's entity should not be a subsidiary company of any foreign corporation.
