Members of European Parliament approve new law to increase quantity of sustainable jet fuel in flights

In a major step towards reducing emissions, the members of European Parliament yesterday approved a new law that will increase the quantity of sustainable jet fuel in flights departing from EU airports. The decision is a major step towards reducing emissions and to uptake of sustainable fuels like advanced biofuels or hydrogen in the aviation sector. According to the new rules, EU to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 and to ensure the EU becomes climate-neutral by 2050. These rules are a part of Fit for 55 package. Airlines will be able to market their flights with a label indicating the expected carbon footprint per passenger and the expected CO2 efficiency per kilometre. The new rules on sustainable aviation fuels were adopted by 518 votes, 97 votes against and eight abstentions. New rules will apply as of 1 January 2024.
