In the by-election held for the Gambegre Assembly Constituency, reserved for Scheduled Tribes and located in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, the ruling NPP candidate Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma secured victory. She defeated her nearest rival, Sadhyarani M. Sangma of the All India Trinamool Congress.
Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma is the wife of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. In this by-election, the Indian National Congress candidate Jingjang M. Marak finished in third place. The Gambegre Assembly seat had fallen vacant following the resignation of Congress MLA Saleng A. Sangma, who was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Tura parliamentary constituency.
