Mauritius will hold its parliamentary elections today. Voting begins at 8:30 AM IST and will end at 7:30 PM IST. Incumbent Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth’s Alliance Lepep coalition has pledged to raise minimum wages, increase pensions, and reduce value-added tax on essential goods. The opposition, led by the Alliance du Changement coalition, has also promised to increase pensions. Additionally, they have vowed to introduce free transport and internet services, as well as reduce fuel prices. Located around 2,000 kilometers off the east coast of Africa, Mauritius is recognised as one of the continent’s most stable democracies. Since gaining independence from Britain in 1968, the island nation has developed a thriving economy, supported by its finance, tourism, and agricultural sectors.
