The benchmark domestic equity indices today ended with gains of over 1 percent, extending their upward trajectory for the fifth straight session, with banking, IT, and oil and gas stocks leading the charge. The 30-share index at the Bombay Stock Exchange, Sensex, rose 855 points to close at 79,409. The National Stock Exchange Nifty-50 gained 274 points to settle at 24,126.

The broader market indices at the BSE outperformed the frontline indices. The Mid-Cap index climbed 2.2 percent, and the Small-Cap index added over 1.6 per cent.
