Market Update: Sensex rises 131 pts; Nifty climbs 37 pts

Indian benchmark indices ended higher in a volatile session today. At close, the 30-stock index, Sensex was up 131 points or 0.17 percent at 77,341 and the Nifty climbed 37 points or 0.16 percent at 23,538.

 
In the broader market at the BSE, the Mid-Cap index was up by 0.37 percent while the Small-cap index gained 0.27 percent.
 
19 out of 30 companies registered gains in the Sensex index. The top three gainers today were Mahindra & Mahindra 2.69 percent, Powergrid 2.23 percent and Sun Pharma 1.93 percent.
Conversely, the three major laggards were, IndusInd Bank 2.37 percent, Adani Ports 1.72 percent and Tata Steel 1.08 percent.
 
In Sectoral Indices at the BSE, 11 out of 20 Sectors were positive. The top three gainers were, Auto sector 1.33 percent, the Power sector 1.28 percent and industrial sector 1 percent.
Whereas, Metal sector 0.91 percent, Services sector 0.69 percent and Energy sector 0.55 percent were the three major laggards.
 
The overall Market breadth was positive. Out of 4,155 Companies, the shares of 2107 companies advanced, 1890 declined and 158 remained unchanged.
 
 
In the Forex market today, the rupee appreciated 7 paise to trade at 83 rupees and 46 paise against the US dollar today. The dollar index, which indicates the US dollar’s strength against a basket of six other leading currencies, was down by 0.25 percent at 105.53 in intra-day trade.
 
 
 Major Asian indices ended mixed today. Japan’s Nikkei climbed 0.54 percent, Singapore’s Straits Times increased 0.25 percent, China’s Shanghai Composite Index tanked 1.18 percent, South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.71 percent. While Hong Kong’s Hang Seng remains unchanged.
 
In the European market, major indices are trading higher today. France’s CAC gained 0.93 percent, Germany’s DAX added 0.70 percent and London’s FTSE was higher by 0.44 percent, when the reports last came in.
 
 
Crude oil prices firmed slightly today as traders weighed support from expected summer demand and geopolitical tensions against a stronger dollar.
 
 
Brent crude was up by 0.39 percent, to 85 dollars and 57 cents per barrel. The U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude lower 0.38 percent, to 81 dollars and 04 cents per barrel, when reports last came in.
 
 
 At Multi Commodity Exchange, Gold and Silver prices are up today. The precious metal, for August contract, up by 0.13 percent and trading at 71,680 rupees per 10 grams.
 
 
Silver for July contract, increased 0.11 percent and trading at 89,238 rupees per kilogram when the reports last came in.
In the global markets, gold was trading 0.37 percent up at 2,339 dollars and 90 cents per ounce on Comex. Meanwhile, Silver was trading up by 0.19 percent at 30 dollars per ounce in the intra-day session, when the reports last came in.
