Mark Carney continues as Prime Minister of Canada following his party’s win in general elections

Mark Carney will continue as Prime Minister of Canada as Liberal Party has won the election for House of Commons. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre conceded defeat after failing to bring an end to the dominance of the Liberal Party. The political newcomer and former banker Carney successfully steered the Liberals to an outstanding victory after running neck-and-neck with Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in the lead-up to election day. However, Canada is still counting votes and the Liberal party is leading in 168 seats while they need 172 for a majority. If they clear the threshold, they will secure a majority government. If they get less than 172 seats – as they did under Justin Trudeau in 2021 – they will need the support of other parties.
In his victory speech in Ontario’s Nepean, Carney said, US President Trump is trying to break Canadians so that America can own them, asserting that, that will never ever happen. More than once, the PM stressed that Canada is prepared to take on the US.
