In Manipur, the State Government has made all preparations to observe Khongjom Day today at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex in Khebaching of Thoubal district. Every year, Khongjom Day is observed on April 23 to commemorate the valour and sacrifice of Manipuri heroes who laid down their lives in the historic Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891.
The observation will be held this morning at Khongjom War Memorial Complex, in which the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, will grace as Chief Guest, while the Chief Secretary of Manipur, Prasant Kumar Singh, will preside over the function. The State Government has already informed all officers and staff of the State Government to attend the observation, and special transport arrangements have been made for the general public today.
The observance will begin with a Sankirtan, and later the Government will lead others in the floral tributes at the Khongjom War Memorial and the statue of Major Paona Brajabashi, who laid down his life in the war. A traditional offering of Tarpon will also be held near the Khongjom River in honour of the fallen heroes.
