Maldives: Torrential rains caused extensive flooding in northern parts of country

Torrential rains have caused extensive flooding in the northern parts of the Maldives, with damages to several houses being reported from the northern city of Kulhudhuffushi. The National Disaster Management Authority of the Archipelago said that at least 69 houses suffered damage due to flooding. Earlier, the local Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert in view of the active south-west monsoon locally called Hulhangu Monsoon. The Kulhudhuffushi City Council officials informed local media that the flooding has impacted the whole island and has damaged 65 percent of the houses. People were evacuated from severely impacted houses, accommodating them in temporary shelters, while pumps were used to dewater the streets. Earlier last week, rains wreaked havoc in the capital Male’ as it witnessed heavy rains disrupting daily life.
