Makar Sankranti is celebrated in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh today, and Pongal is celebrated in Tamil Nadu. Makar Sankranti is celebrated today to mark the beginning of Uttarayana, the Sun’s movement northward, entering the zodiac sign of Makara. It is a harvest festival when Sankranti Yellu is made after mixing jaggery, groundnut, sesame seeds, and dried coconut are prepared and given away among friends and relatives. It is also customary to give sugarcane, turmeric, sweet potatoes, and other food grains on this occasion. In Tamil Nadu, a four-day harvest festival is known as Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal, Kaanum Pongal, and Bhogi. In remembrance of the Sun, people make the rice and lentil dish Pongal.
