Maharashtra govt decides to shift citizens from landslide-prone areas to safer and permanent resettlements

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde today said his government has decided to shift citizens from landslide-prone areas to safer and permanent resettlements. This comes a day after a devastating landslide claimed at least 21 lives in Irshalwadi hamlet of Raigad district. Speaking in the state assembly this afternoon, Mr. Shinde said people are often hesitant to leave their homes despite warnings but considering the seriousness of the threat, district administration will have to identify all such areas and ensure full evacuation and rehabilitation.

Talking about the Raigad landslide, the Chief Minister said extreme rains, gusty winds, and the difficult terrain has slowed down rescue operations. Mr. Shinde said a base camp has been set up to provide necessary medical aid and container arrangements are being made to accommodate the displaced families.

The Chief Minister announced that the City and Industrial Development Corporation – CIDCO has been assigned the job of constructing permanent homes for all the 48 affected families of Irshalwadi.

Meanwhile, rescue operations in the region have been called off for the day due to inclement weather conditions.
