Maharashtra: Curfew partially relaxed in Nagpur after violence; 84 arrested

In Maharashtra, after the violence erupted between 2 groups on Monday night in Nagpur city, the curfew imposed in 11 zones of Nagpur was relaxed in 8 areas yesterday while the prohibitory orders in violence-affected areas of Kotwali Ganeshpeth and Tehsil police station are still in force.

Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Singal informed that police have arrested about 84 persons involved in these incidents so far and the accused are being produced before the Nagpur District court for trials. The law and order situation is under control in view of the upcoming festival season.

Meanwhile, the alleged main accused behind the violent clashes Faheem Khan along with 5 others are booked under the act of treason by the cyber cell police of Nagpur. It is suspected that these persons, associated with the political outfit Minority Democratic Party of India, incited the mob for violent moves on Monday night after communal tension prevailed due to the alleged burning of the religious symbols by right-wing outfits -Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

The district administration is assessing the loss to the property of citizens during the stone pelting and arson. The chairman of the State Minority Commission Pyare Khan has instructed the district officials to assess the damage and issue compensation within 48 hours to the violence-affected people.
