Magnitude 6.8 earthquake strikes eastern Cuba

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck eastern Cuba last night, causing widespread damage in Santiago de Cuba and surrounding areas. The US Geological Survey reported that the quake’s epicentre was along Cuba’s southeastern coast in Granma province. The earthquake shook buildings in Santiago de Cuba, the island’s second-largest city, and affected rural regions, leading to landslides and disruptions. In a social media post, President Miguel Díaz-Canel addressed the situation, reporting landslides, damaged homes, and downed power lines. He said, ‘Our first priority is to save lives. Emergency teams are currently evaluating the impact and responding to immediate needs.’
