LS adjourned till 2 PM following opposition parties' protest over issue of violence in Manipur

The Lok Sabha has been adjourned till 2 PM following opposition parties' protest over the issue of violence in Manipur.  When the Lok Sabha met for the day, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury urged Presiding Officer Rajendra Agrawal to request Speaker Om Birla to resume presiding over the proceedings of Lok Sabha. He added that the Speaker is the custodian of MPs.  Mr. Agrawal said that he will convey the message to the Speaker.  

The comment came in the backdrop of media reports that the Speaker is not happy with the continuous disruption in the House. Members from Congress, DMK, TMC, JD(U) and others trooped into the well raising slogans. They were demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement in the House. Amid pandemonium, the Presiding Officer asked the protesting members to go back to their seats but they continued with their sloganeering. Amid the ruckus, the Presiding Officer tried to run the Question Hour but in vain. Later, the House was adjourned till 2 PM.

The Rajya Sabha also witnessed protests from the members of opposition parties over the issue of Manipur. When the House met this morning, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar disallowed the adjournment notices moved by the opposition members on Manipur and other issues. Derek O Brien of TMC said, people want to hear about the Manipur issue. He appealed to find a solution to end the logjam to have a discussion on Manipur. Leader of the House Piyush Goyal said, Manipur is a sensitive issue and the government stands with the people of Manipur. He said the government is ready for discussion. 

Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge reiterated the opposition parties' demand to have a discussion under the rule 267 by suspending all the business of the House. The Chairman said, everyone wants a discussion on the issue and it has been accepted without any time constraint. The opposition members from Congress, TMC, DMK, RJD, Aam Aadmi Party and others started raising slogans demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement over the Manipur issue.

Later the opposition members staged a walkout from the House.
