Managing Director of Lanka Indian Oil Corporation, Dipak Das has said that Lanka IOC and Indian High Commission played a crucial role, providing much-needed assistance during Sri Lanka’s fuel crisis last year. Speaking to Akashvani, he said that Lanka IOC worked closely with the Indian High Commission and the Sri Lankan government to ensure a steady supply of fuel and actively contributed in finding solutions to long queues before petrol sheds.
India had emerged as a steadfast partner of Sri Lanka when the island nation witnessed its worst-ever economic crisis last year. Sri Lanka had come to a grinding halt as its forex reserves depleted to 20 Million dollars rendering the island nation unable to import fuel. India adopted a multi-pronged approach, extending dedicated fuel support of 700 Million dollars which was a part of a 4 billion dollar assistance. Lanka IOC then facilitated the import of fuel to ensure a steady supply of fuel.
Further, with more than 90 percent of Lanka IOC's workforce comprising Sri Lankan citizens India has been creating job opportunities as well. In addition, Lanka IOC has also contributed a total of 400 million rupees over the last one year to the president’s fund meant for education, upliftment of the society, and other social causes.
