In Ladakh, the Union Territory Administration has introduced the Universal Health Care Scheme, alongside the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, to ensure quality healthcare for residents in remote and hilly areas. Under this scheme, the administration has made every ration card holder eligible for a Golden Card to receive the benefits of the financed health insurance cover of 5 lakh rupees per household for treatment in secondary and tertiary care hospitals. To achieve the target of 90,826 generations of golden cards in the Leh district, excluding children below five years of age and defence personnel and veterans, the district administration is considering special drives for school-going children at schools.
