In Ladakh, the strategic Srinagar-Leh National Highway has been closed due to more than three feet of snowfall at Zojila Pass after remaining open for for longest period till February 26th. The Kargil-Zanskar National Highway has also been shut down for traffic following heavy snowfall.
The snowfall across Kargil district has ranged from one to three feet in different areas. The Meteorological Centre Leh has however forecast an improvement in weather conditions in the afternoon.
The district administration has advised people to remain indoors and exercise caution, especially in areas prone to avalanches. An avalanche warning has been issued for elevations above 3200 meters in Kargil from February 27th to February 28th, 2025. Men and machinery have been deployed to clear snow from both urban and rural roads to restore connectivity.
