Kerala on Red Alert as sea is likely to be dominated by high-energy swell waves in low-lying areas

Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) forecasts high-energy swell waves along the Kerala and Tamil Nadu coasts, which are expected to persist until 11:30 p.m. today. Presently the sea is remaining relatively calm. No high tide events have been reported along the Kerala coast so far. However, Kerala is on red alert as low-lying coastal areas could experience intermittent surges of seawater due to the swell waves. This phenomenon is locally known as ‘Kallakadal.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority had issued directives suspending recreational activities along the beaches. The public has been advised against travelling to the coast, and instructions have been issued to evacuate people from the beaches since last night. Coastal residents are also urged to evacuate the place temporarily. Fishermen are cautioned against venturing into the sea until the warning is lifted.
