In Kerala, the NIA has filed chargesheet in the Special Court at Ernakulam, against Shahrukh Saifi, a Delhi Shaheenbagh youth, in connection with the train arson incident that took place near Elathur in Kozhikode district in April.
NIA said Shahrukh Saifi, the sole accused in the case, was self-radicalized through various online materials available on social media. He committed the crime with a motive to create terror in the minds of the people through jihadi activities and chose Kerala, as he would not be recognized.
Saifi managed to escape from the spot after sprinkling petrol on passengers and setting fire to a bogey of the Alappuzha-Kannur Executive Express. He was nabbed by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad from Ratnagiri and was handed over to the Kerala Police.
Three persons, including a woman and a child, were found dead near the railway tracks later when they jumped off the moving train in a bid to escape the flames. Nine others were injured in the incident.
The NIA took over the case from the Special Investigation Team constituted by the Kerala government to probe the incident.
