Army continues search operations in Wayanad Landslide; Over 300 feared dead

Search operations led by the Army continue in Wayanad, devastated by the huge landslide last Tuesday. Over 300 persons are believed to have lost their lives in the landslide, while more body parts are being recovered from Chaliyar river in Malappuram district further downstream. Akashvani Kochi Correspondent reports that search operations for more bodies in the landslide affected regions have entered the sixth day today. Search teams have fanned out in the affected areas in search of more bodies. Searches have been intensified in the Chaliyar river in Malappuram district, where bodies washed away in the landslide were recovered.

 

So far 156 dismembered body parts have been recovered from Chaliyar river. The State Health Department has taken up counselling and assistance for children who survived the landslide. 137 Counsellors have been deployed for this purpose. The Department has also set up clinics in Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Tourism, Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi visited the landslide affected areas in Wayanad this morning to take stock of the situation.
