Kerala: IMD issues Orange alert in Kannur and Kasaragod districts today

In Kerala, the IMD has issued an Orange alert in Kannur and Kasaragod districts today. It has issued yellow alert in the districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayand.

Heavy rains continued in Kannur, where water logging has been reported in low lying areas. In some places where the construction of National Highway -66 is in progress, water logging has become severe.

In Kozhikode, the body of a youth who accidently fell into a river day before yesterday while fishing, was recovered today. Five fishermen from Chaliyar in Kozhikode, who were stranded mid- sea, were rescued by a  Coast Guard vessel and were taken to Mangaluru. A two and a half year old girl lost her life when she accidently fell into a water-filled ditch near her home in Thrissur district.

Huge rocks and earth fell on Munnar Gap Road in Idukki district on the Kochi-Dhanushkodi Highway  this morning. Movement of vehicles on the road has been completely stopped.

One of the shutters of Poringalkoothu dam in Idukki district has been raised four feet. People living on both sides of Chalakkudi river have been asked to remain vigilant.

Water logging continues in the low lying areas of Kottayam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts. In Pathanamthitta district 2186 persons including five pregnant women and 363 children have been accommodated in 68 relief camps. Water level in Manimala, Pampa, Madaman and Achankovil rivers in the district are showing a falling trend.
