Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today said that 93 bodies have been recovered so far from the landslide-hit Wayanad district. Addressing media persons in Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayan said 34 bodies have been identified of which 18 have been handed over to the relatives. 128 persons who were injured, have been admitted to various hospitals. 16 bodies that were swept away following the landslide were recovered from Chaliyar river at Pothukal in Malappuram district.
Terming the landslide as one of the worst natural disasters to hit the state, the Chief Minister said the first landslide took place around 2 AM, followed by another one at around 4.10 AM.
The landslide resulted in the bifurcation of the river Eravanjipuzha into two.
The Chief Minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Amit Shah, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose were among those who spoke to him and offered help. He said 45 relief camps have been opened in Wayanad in which 3069 persons have been accommodated. Pinarayi Vijayan also paid tributes to those who lost their lives in the landslide.
