In Jammu and Kashmir, the government is planning to introduce a crop insurance scheme specifically tailored for the horticulture sector, a major contributor to the region’s economy, to benefit hundreds of farmers. Akashvani Jammu Correspondent reports that the scheme aims to protect farmers from the adverse effects of unpredictable weather and natural disasters, addressing a long-standing demand from the stakeholders. The proposed crop insurance scheme is designed to mitigate financial losses faced by farmers due to crop failures caused by natural calamities, pests and diseases. By providing this safety net, the scheme aims to encourage farmers to invest in better farming practices and technologies, ultimately leading to increased productivity and sustainability. The government plans to collaborate with insurance companies and financial institutions to implement the scheme effectively. The insurance will be subsidised, making it affordable for farmers and awareness campaigns and training sessions will be conducted to educate farmers about the benefits and processes involved in availing crop insurance. The introduction of the crop insurance scheme is anticipated to boost farmers’ confidence, encourage the adoption of modern agricultural practices, stabilise farm incomes and reduce dependency on government aid during crises, thereby contributing to the overall economic development of the region.
