Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been honoured with the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024, recognising his exceptional performances across all formats. Bumrah becomes the first Indian pacer to win this award, joining an elite list of Indian cricketers that includes Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016), and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018).
Bumrah played a crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, held in the USA and the West Indies. He finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 15 scalps, as India defeated South Africa in the final to lift the trophy. In Test cricket, Bumrah had an equally dominant year, taking 71 wickets in 13 matches, the highest by any bowler in 2024. His contributions were instrumental in India’s success across formats.
Bumrah faced tough competition from Travis Head, Joe Root, and Harry Brook for the coveted award. Earlier this week, he also bagged the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award, further cementing his place as one of the finest players of the year.
Expressing his gratitude, Bumrah highlighted the T20 World Cup victory as a moment that will remain close to his heart. Currently, Bumrah is recovering from a back niggle sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and is aiming to return in time for the Champions Trophy scheduled to be held from the 19th of next month.
