Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana led interventions and digital transformation have revolutionized financial inclusion in the country in the last nine years. On completion of nine years of the government’s flagship scheme for financial inclusion, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana today, the Minister said, it is heartening to note that more than 50 crore people have been brought into the formal banking system through the opening of Jan Dhan Accounts.
The scheme was launched on 28th August in 2014 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During these nine years, the scheme has witnessed quantum jump in the opening of new bank accounts. According to the Finance Ministry, over 50 crore new bank accounts have been opened since the launch of this scheme. Around 56 percent Jan-Dhan account holders are women and around 67 percent accounts in rural and semi-urban areas. The Ministry said, total deposit balances in the accounts under the scheme stands at more than two lakh three thousand crore rupees. It said, more than 33 crore RuPay cards were issued to Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana account holders. The Finance Ministry said, about six crore 26 lakh account holders received direct benefit transfer from the Government under various schemes.
