Italy boat mishap: 6 bodies recovered, search on for remaining 40 missing migrants

The Italian Coast Guard has recovered six bodies and is searching for up to 40 missing migrants after a rubber dinghy that departed from Tunisia sank in the central Mediterranean. The UN refugee agency in Italy said today that another 10 people, including four women, were rescued yesterday. Survivors reported that approximately 56 people were aboard the dinghy when it departed from the Tunisian port of Sfax on Monday evening, according to the UNHCR. The boat began to deflate a few hours after departure. Those on board were from Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Guinea, and Mali. The UN Missing Migrants Project estimates that over 24,500 people have died or gone missing in the perilous central Mediterranean from 2014 to 2024, many of whom were lost at sea.
