Union Minister of State for Fisheries L. Murugan has said that it was the Narendra Modi-led Government that acknowledged the importance of fisheries, fish development, fish farming and related activities and created a separate Ministry to handle fisheries. Delivering his speech at the eighth convocation of Tamilnadu Fisheries University in Chennai, the Minister said that the Government had allotted Rs. 38 thousand crore investment for the development of the fishing Industry in the Country. In his speech, he said that the Government had raised the standards of education to a global level. He informed that 5000 Crore Rupees had been set apart for Blue Revolution since 2019 and 7500 Crore Rupees for the fisheries infrastructure development fund.
He said that a separate fishing harbour for Tuna fishing and other fishing harbour at Marakkanam will be set up to develop seasonal fishing activities along with the infrastructure to store and processing. The Minister said that the aquaculture resource in India was tremendous and India is at the forefront of shrimp export mainly from Andhra and Tamilnadu. On the welfare of the fish farmers, he said that 20 thousand crores have been allotted for Prime Minister Swasthya Suraksha Yojana and an amount of. 6000 Crore rupees was set apart for the purchase of sophisticated equipment needed for the fishermen. He said the Government has fixed a target of reaching one lakh crore in fishing export in 2025.
The Minister informed that out of the one lakh start-ups in the Country, 400 start-ups belonged to the fishing sector.
