Iran Declares National Mourning After Deadly Port Explosion

The Iranian government has declared a day of national mourning on April 28 amid the deadly blast at the Shahid Rajaee port, Iranian government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said today. According to the latest reports, 28 people died and over 1,200 were injured in yesterday’s blast at the port near the southern Iranian city of Bandar Abbas.

 

The blast occurred when a fuel tanker exploded at the port in Hormozgan Province. However, the government said the exact cause is still under investigation.

 

President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a statement on social media, expressed his sorrow and sympathy with the victims and issued an order to investigate the causes of the incident. He said that the Interior Minister had been sent to the region as his special representative to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. The National Iranian Petroleum Refining and Distribution Company said that the oil facilities were not affected by the blast.
