India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish stressed that the use of Veto has been a tool for achieving political interests by the five permanent members of the Council. Speaking at the Un General Assembly yesterday, Mr. Harish said that during the last eight decades, all five permanent members of the Council have used the Veto nearly 200 times. He emphasised that this practice contradicts the principle of sovereign equality among UN member states.
Mr. Harish further emphasized India’s clear stance on the Veto, stating that as long as the Veto exists, it must be held by all permanent members as a matter of fairness and justice. We therefore support the common African position on the Veto, he said. Mr Harish also called for a comprehensive approach to reforming the UN Security Council, focusing on all five key aspects, especially the veto. Reiterating India’s commitment to meaningful UN reform, he added that India remains fully committed to supporting initiatives that promote a more inclusive and representative UN.
