India’s Airfares Among Lowest Globally, Moderated Further in 2024: Civil Aviation Minister

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Minister Murlidhar Mohol has said that the airfare in India is lower than that in most countries. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, Mr. Mohol said the Tariff Monitoring Unit (TMU), established in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has carried out a comparative analysis of airfares offered on various routes in the country and abroad. He said the analysis reveals that the airfare per kilometre offered by Indian carriers is low in India when compared globally.

The minister said the airfares have moderated in 2024, compared to 2023. He said the airlines have also been sensitised to ensure reasonability while fixing the airfares and to keep passengers’ interests in mind. Mr. Mohol said, notably, during festival seasons, a decrease in airfares was observed in various sectors. He said TMU monitors airfares on select domestic sectors on a random basis by using airlines’ websites on a monthly basis to ensure that the airlines do not charge airfares outside the range declared by them. The minister said, that while the government generally refrains from regulating airfares to maintain market competitiveness, it remains vigilant. He said, given the complex dynamics of the Indian aviation industry, the government is playing the role of a facilitator by creating an enabling environment to support the growth of the sector.
