Indian Embassy in Thailand monitoring situation, emergency number issued

The Indian Embassy is actively monitoring the situation in coordination with Thai authorities. As of now, no untoward incidents involving Indian citizens have been reported. In a social media post, the Indian Embassy advised Indian nationals in Thailand to contact the emergency number +66 618819218 in case of any emergency. It also confirmed that all members of the Indian Embassy in Bangkok and the Consulate in Chiang Mai are safe.
Meanwhile, Myanmar declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Naypyitaw and Mandalay. The quake damaged buildings, roads, and infrastructure. According to media reports, the Thai defence minister says 90 are missing and 3 dead at the site where a high-rise under construction collapsed in a quake.
The iconic Ava Bridge in Myanmar’s Mandalay reportedly collapsed into the Irrawaddy River and several buildings collapsed due to the massive quakes, whose epicentre was near Sagaing. Strong tremors were also felt around 900 km away in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, forcing people to run out of their homes. The tremors sent water sloshing out of pools from high-rises and several buildings were evacuated as they swayed due to the impact of the quake. In the meantime, Rescue teams in Myanmar are working to find survivors and help those affected. The earthquake has rocked many parts of Thailand, including its capital Bangkok, the venue for next week’s summit of BIMSTEC regional grouping that is scheduled to be attended by Prime Minister Modi among other leaders.
