Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. L. Murugan, today informed that there are a total of 522 commissioned community radio stations in 308 districts across India. In a written reply in Lok Sabha today, the minister said that due to recent initiatives taken by the government in the last ten years, there has been almost a 300 percent increase in the number of community radio stations. He said several initiatives have been taken to increase the number of community radio stations in the country under the Central Sector scheme titled “Supporting Community Radio Movement in India. Dr. Murugan added that during the last three years, 104 relay stations of Akashvani and Doordarshan have been set up across the country.
